Build a Menu That Sells

Variations, modifiers, and organization tips to maximize order value.

Your menu is the single biggest factor in online order conversion. OpenPOS uses a Square-style modifier system that's intuitive for both you and your customers.

Two concepts to understand

Variations are what an item is — different sizes or versions with different prices:

  • Coffee: Small ($3.50), Medium ($4.50), Large ($5.50)
  • Pizza: 10" ($12), 14" ($16), 18" ($20)

Customers must pick one variation. Each has its own price.

Modifiers are what you add to an item — optional or required customizations:

  • Burger toppings: Bacon (+$2), Avocado (+$1.50), Extra Cheese (+$1)
  • Coffee add-ons: Oat Milk (+$0.75), Extra Shot (+$1)

Modifiers are organized into groups with rules — required vs optional, minimum/maximum selections.

Setting up your menu

  1. Create categories — Go to Menu > Categories. Keep names short and familiar: "Salads" not "Fresh Garden Selections". Aim for 4–8 categories.
  2. Add items — Click Add Item. Include a clear name, price, description (ingredients and key flavors), and a photo.
  3. Add variations — If the item comes in sizes/versions, add variations with individual prices.
  4. Add modifiers — Create modifier groups for add-ons and customizations.
  5. Reorder — Drag categories and items to set the display order. Put bestsellers first.

Tips for AI discoverability

AI agents read your menu to help customers order. To make this work well:

  • Use clear, descriptive names — "Spicy Chicken Sandwich" is better than "The Firecracker".
  • Write short descriptions with key ingredients — AI uses these to answer customer questions like "do you have anything gluten-free?"
  • Tag items with accurate categories — this helps AI recommend items.

86ing items

Ran out of something? "86" it instantly from the Menu page, the 86 Board (Operations > 86 Board), or the Staff App. The item disappears from your storefront immediately. Toggle it back when you restock.
